Should I use a surge protector to protect against power issues and/or lightning?
We recommend using a quality surge protector rated for Broadband (DSL). Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are another option to provide the safety of a battery backup to your computer equipment.
Try to steer clear of the cheaper models. Many of these units are nothing more than extension cords and offer little protection. Also note, many surge protectors are single use units. If the unit sustains a power surge (i.e.: lightning, power spikes, etc.) it may not protect against future surges.
While surge protectors may not stop every single surge, they are well worth the peace of mind. Many even offer equipment replacement guarantees in the event that the protection fails.
Any reputable computer, audio or video store should be able to point you toward the unit that will best meet your needs.
